how to enable barrier for ext3 filesystem in section 8.2

hi
I have same question as title . I want to add barrier=1 to fstab my suggestion is :

# file system mount-point type options dump fsck
# order

/dev/sdb1 / ext3 defaults,barrier=1 1 1

but when I search , there are problems with add this option . many people add this option but when booting the system , barrier is not enabled .

how I add this option ????
