Question ping server_name don't works ping IP_address yes... why?

Hello,

this is my first post here, I'm completeley new at linux.

I cannot get a response if from my windows I run
ping server_name

I can only get an answer if I run
ping 111.111.111.111

When I try it from VNC also I cannot get it, but I can connect using the IP.

When I try it from outlook I cannot reach the email server if I don't do it from the IP also.

Any idea?

I know that this must be the easiest thing on earth, but without it I don't want to configure anything else.

Thank you in advance for your help.

do you have internet access? it sounds like a dns issue. make sure your dns servers are configured properly and you could also update your /etc/hosts file to include a record for the windows server.

Check the HOST file in Windows, it must contain the IP address and the hostname for every computer on the network.

I have internet access. If I reconfigure the samba server from the GUI it starts working, and when I restart the computer it stops working again...

This is very simple boss,
this happenes because the name resolution is not happening.
What is name resolution, right ?

Check out some reading about DNS or BIND and you will come to know.

Thank you.

OK, thank you very much.

I've configured samba and it began to work perfectly.

Thank you again.
