Missing init

I am using Red Hat Enterprises 3.0

in /etc/fstab file i changed the label from '/' to redhat of(hd0,1)
by command 'e2label'
now at booting time after loading kernel it says, missing init, and
goes in hanging.

tell me the reason

also tell me somthing about various fields in /etc/fstab file.

(hd0,1) is a naming convention that grub uses, you cannot use it in fstab. You gotta use some thing like /dev/hda2 which is (hd0,1) 's equivalent.

Edit the grubs config file /etc/grub.conf and then change to root=/dev/hda2 instead of root=LABEL=/
