Cannot take tar backup

Hello Everybody,

We are using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. I have 2 queries.

1) I want to take FULL backup of the entire system 9/, /boot, /usr etc...) using the tar command. The command "tar -cvf <dat drive filename> /" does not work. I gave this command from the "/" partition. It takes backup of some files and comes out giving the error saying (...... no. of 10240 bytes written etc...).

2) I have tried giving the command "tar -cvf <dat drive filename> -L 25165824 /usr /usr1". Here in this command I am trying to take the /usr and /usr1 partitions backup on the dat whose size is 24 GB. The size of the /usr and /usr1 partition is 8.5 and 3.0 GB respectively. It just writes for around 15 minutes (approx. 250 MB) and asks for volume 2 to be loaded in the dat drive. The full capacity of the dat i.e. 24 GB) is not being used.

Kindly help.

Neville.

Hello Everybody,

We are using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. I have 2 queries.

1) I want to take FULL backup of the entire system (i.e. all partitions - /, /boot, /usr, usr1, /home etc...) using the tar command. The command "tar -cvf /dev/sd0 /" or the command "tar -cvf /dev/sd0 ." given from the "/" partition does not work. (/dev/sd0 is the filename of the internal dat drive that is attached to the system). It takes backup of some files and comes out giving the error as follows :-
tar: /dev/sd0: Wrote only 6144 of 10240 bytes
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now.
The size of the dat loaded in the internal dat drive is 24 GB. It comes out giving the above error.

2) I have tried giving the command "tar -cvf /dev/sd0 -L 25165824 /usr /usr1" also. Here in this command, I am trying to take the tar backup of the /usr and /usr1 partitions backup on the dat whose size is 24 GB. The size of the /usr and /usr1 partitions are 8.5 GB and 3.0 GB respectively. It just writes for around 15 minutes (approx. 250 MB) and asks for volume 2 to be loaded in the dat drive. The full capacity of the dat i.e. 24 GB) is not being utilised.

Kindly help.

Neville.
