Xterm on SLES9 guest via zLinux
I am having trouble getting an xterm session configured via SSH on a SLES9 guest on zLinux using my local X server. I manage other Linux (SLES 10) and Unix (AIX 5.3) servers (not zVM) via the same method with no issues.
Our present method is to start a local X server session on our workstations via Exceed, once the local X server is running we use Putty to SSH to the server, then export the $DISPLAY variable to our IP address, once that's done we can start an xterm session, we can do this w/o changing any values in the /etc/ssh/ssh_config or /etc/ssh/sshd_config files relating to Xll. (we have them set to Forwardx11Trusted no & X11Forwarding no respectively.
On the SLES9 guest I am able to get an xterm session working, but only by using the method below:
Putty > Connection > SSH > Tunnels > Enable X11 Forwarding
Login as user
Run: echo $DISPLAY and copy the value
SU to root
Type: export DISPLAY=$DISPLAY value
Edit: vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Change: X11Forwarding from no to yes
Run: /etc/rc.d/sshd restart
Run: cp -r /home/user/.Xauthority .
Run: xterm
Our security policy won't allow us to change the X11Forwarding value to yes, especially since it's working via the "standard" method on our other Unix bases servers.
I'm out of ideas to try; please share yours.
