Why does Redhat 8.0 access hard drive second by second?

Did a search, but couldn't find anything quite like this...

Do any of you have any idea why Redhat 8.0 appears to be accessing my hard disk for a brief moment about once every second, or so? Also, can any of you confirm that it does, or does not, happen on your machine? I've read about the thing where Linux accesses the drive about every 5-seconds, but this seems to be different.

The frequecy at which this happens is almost like watching the seconds go by on a clock. The hard drive light blicks on, then right back off for each second, and it does this repeatedly throughout each session on the machine. I've tried turning off different services to see if it would stop, but no luck. Maybe it's supposed to be doing this, but the latest Slackware and Mandrake don't do it.

I've tried reinstalling, but the same thing happens and it begins as soon as the computer is restarted from the fresh install.

It's not that big a deal, but it has my curiosity up, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

i would assume it is just the ext3 journal being committed, this will happen about once a second.

Someone else was complaining about "Magicdev" doing something similar.

Is that process running for you?

Wow - thanks for the extra speedy replies, guys.

Acid_K: I thought that might be it too, but it's my understanding that it's 5 seconds on the ext3 issue, and when I run Slack and Mandrake with ext3, they don't do this...???

KevinJ: I'm not on that particular machine at the moment, but when I get back on it, I'll check out the Magicdev thing.

Thanks again to both of you.

Okay, Kevin - I'm back on the Redhat box now and Magicdev is running, and it appears to be the cause of the constant drive accessing. It's not really causing any problems for me so I'll let it be for now but I couldn't stand not knowing what was at work here.

Thanks to you and to all that replied.
