I am happy to say that I use Debian GNU/Linux squeeze. I have configured it with a GeoStack (Geoserver, Apache2/Tomcat6, PostgreSQL/PostGIS), GRASS GIS, QGIS, uDIG, openJUMP, GPS, and Saga GIS. Check the url for the data and tutorial. Debian has what I need to use. Apart from GeoServer, MapServer or MapGuide can be used to configure a spatial database and to access database spatial data to be rendered in a web server.
