what do you plan to use it for....programming or what? they are all good distros, ubuntu included. i use ubuntu but i'm a newbie so that answers that. anyways, besides, no matter what distro you get you can add to it and customize it to suit your personal tastes and needs (from what i've read and seen). to quote from what i've read here "there are several live cd's out, download those and play with them for a day or two untill you find one you like". that's what i did. i've used fc1 and 5, knoppix, dsl, gnoppix, puppy, barebones, feather, on and on until i found ubuntu. they are all good distros and for the moment, ubuntu suits me. good luck on your journey.

The best distro is the one you like and can use with few problems. Other than that the question is very subjective since everyone has their own "best" distro. If you like RH you may want to try Fedora.

Programming tools can be added to any distro.

Sense you like RH rather than Debian based distros, use Fedora Core Release 6. And because you are a programmer, you will need the latest software.

vi is old and doesn't include the features of vim. use vim, and yes, that is in Ubuntu, but you don't have to use Ubuntu.

If you must use RH rather than Fedora, use CentOS or else you won't be getting updates unless you pay and get tech support with RH. That's not necessary if you aren't running a business. Fedora is a better choice for you.

If you like RH you should try Fedora core, it has the option to install loads of Programming applications, but as said above Programming apps can be intergrated into any distro, but yeah FC5 might be your best bet if you are a RH user:http://fedora.redhat.com/ Knoppix is also very good for Live CD use, but is a difficult distro when it comes to install you might want to check it out: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

you might also want to check out: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/

Hope this helps,

Jake

What did you decide to do? Just search the forum for "which distro" and you should be about 5 billion threads that look the same as yours.

bchaynes3 is that link you gave the little distro quiz? if it is, that's a fun quiz that i've taken plenty of times. just to see what distro i get offered by giving different answers. i just can't remember what the link is now.

If you are comfortable with Red Hat, but dont want to use Fedora, why not try CENTOS? That is based on the free Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source, so it will be stabler than Fedora, if that is your concern.

PS this really belongs in 'The Brand New UltraMegaSuper "Which Distro Thread"'

that and keep in mind that any distro you get, is able to be configured to your needs. just may take some installing or compiling but still you build to you. that is the best distro for you. just go with what feels right to you and one your comfortable with.
