Question upgrade mandrake 8.2 to redhat 9

hello,
I need to upgrade mandrake 8.2 to redhat 9. I was hoping to just upgrade but in the redhat setup, redhat only looks for previous redhat installations. it seems they are independent, can this be done?
thanks

RedHat and Mandrake are different distrobutions. You can't upgrade Mandrake with RedHat, or Debian with Slackware, or Gentoo with Yellow Dog, etc. etc. etc.

How is your Mandrake system partitioned? If you have /home mounted on a separate partition then you can keep all your files you have in your home directory, and just choose not to format that partition when installing RedHat.

Just remember NOT to format your /home partition. Also, some of your hidden config directories/files may jive with Redhat, if there is a newer version of some of those apps (which is likely going from MDK 8.2 to RH9). I would remove any of the ~/.gnome directories if you are a gnome user, or else you may have issues starting gnome.
