any linux distro will load fast or slow. it depends on if you use a minimalist approach or the MS / MACOS default of BLOAT IT UP. linux with do either.
every distro will do either.
most distros are defaulting to the bloat it up style, since most people seem to want thier systems bogged down with bloat. No matter what distro, you will have to pick what you really need / want and what can go.

I am totally a Linux virgin plz help

hi all i just registered few mins ago and i am totally excited about this i just decided to jump over this great wall called (fear) and not only try linux but study it so.....

i know you (all the time) see people asking which is the best and i know that the answer depends on what kind of user you are (programmer , admin , just a simple user .....etc) and also depends on what kind of applications you will be running on the os and not to mention the computer's condition.

but i didnt find an answer to my question
which is i want a distro which could teach me linux
i could easily learn from it.

i want to set it up with my windows xp to switch to it when needed and supports nearly all type of applications as possible
plus works well with games and (lets say) almost tons of extensions.
Lets say i just want it to cooperate with me as when i do anything on it and i really mean anything

i tried to shorten my words a bit but i wanna make sure that i am understood so i am waiting for your opinions.

And by the way i am not a easy type with personal opinions .
but i totally surrender to scientific based opinions
Goodluck to all and thx.

Smile Knoppix

You should Definetly Try out Knoppix (www.knoppix.net).
Great distro that runs from CD so you can try it out without installing anything.
Once you feel comfortable with your Linux skills you should try Slackware.
It is a great distro for learning more about Linux.

Slackware Rocks!

Windows + Slackware

The way I installed Slackware with windows is I went into Knoppix and used QTparted to resize the Windows
partition(it took up the entire disk) and then used cfdisk to partition and install Slackware.

If you want the ultimate linux learning experience try Linux From Scratch which is a how-to book to compile a linux distribution entirely from sources--by hand. It takes forever to accomplish though, unless your computer is top-of-the-line (with much processing ability and much ram). It will make you learn everything about how linux works--but it will take you a week or so to get through to a basic system.

Another good learning distribution is Slackware. While it does not have pre-built packages for some things, and favors rock-hard stability over bleeding edge it is all vanilla and has no configuration helpers--you have to dive into the config files to get it tweaked just so--even though a package manager like slapt-get can save you from dependency hell.

A good blend of the above is Gentoo. This distro is compiled from source--but it is automated by Gentoo's portage system and they have a lot of good patches for their sources. While you can just set it running and never mess with anything it is a good learning distro because it is easy to delve in deep on the parts you want, while handling the rest for you.

thx verdeboy
so you put (linux from scratch) a number 1
then (slackware) a number 2
and (Gentoo) a number 3
but i wanted your opinion about ubuntu
where would you put ubuntu a number 4?
and i dont wanna be a guy who doesnt know what he wants that keeps asking questoins which only means that he is a total loser
all i need is a distro which will make me a linux master ?
i am not a normal desktop user or ( or maybe that is what i want to be considering linux) i am taking MCSE and MCSA courses and almost finished so i would like something like this with linux
covering everything teaching me everything

Mandriva, Debian Sarge, Ubuntu Drapper Drake, Spinux, and Slackware 10.2 are not usable GNU/Linux systems on my hardware. Now that Slackware 11 is out, I might give it a try but work has thought me that time is more valuable then bandwidth spent downloading ISO's.

The hunt continues.

sick and tired of fedora

Hey everyone.

Ive been a redhat and then fedora user from the start. I like everything fc5 but im just sick and tired of the unreliability. For the last week ive been struggling with things working one moment and not the next.

I was hoping you guys can recomend some other distro. I have moderate experience with linux but i need something that uses a package based system like rpms and an easy to use installer so no compiling stuff. Something stable that isnt so developemental like fedora.

Im going to be using it as web server, networking it between windows xp computers, running showeq and pretty much nothing else. For showeq i think i need somethign that has qt3 and the ability to compile programs. I like KDE so something that has that desktop available.

any suggestions would be aprecaiated. thanks.

Terry,
I have no idea what your application is for Linux but I'm sold on SuSE 10.1 and/or SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Sled is the best installing program I've tested - and I've now tested 22. It requires almost no help in coming to life. SuSE 10.1 requires a little skill in setting up networks, printers and wireless.

The good news is that you can buy all of these from cheap CD's for $2 US. You can download SLED 10 Evaluation free and get 30 days of support with it.

Your troubles could be over.
