System halts with message "GRUB"

Hello...

I have a Suse Linux 9.1 prof distru. & I have just installed new HW:

Motherboard: ASUS, A8V deluxe
CPU: AMD athlon 64-bit 3500+
RAM: 1024MB, Vendor uknown (might be kingston).

I also wanted to rearrange my partitions while I was at it, since my linux partition was only 3 GB.

So I have made the following changes to the HDD:
1. Deleted all partitions.
2: Parted the HDD into 3 partitions.
3: Installed Win Xp on drive C:
4: NTFS formatted drive D: & left the last partition untouched.
5: Tried installing Suse on the last partition.
The installation tried booting on the HDD, but came up with the message "GRUB"

Under installation the following partion information was displayed:
Format Partition /dev/hde6 10,0 GB (for / with reiser)
Format Partition /dev/hde5 1,0 GB (for swap)
Set Mount point of /dev/hde1 to /windows/C
Set Mount point of /dev/hde2 to /windows/D

Hde3 & 4 was a SATA drive which I removed just to be sure that it wasnt part of the problem.

I have installed Suse last year with my old HW without any problems.

Hope You can help me...

Best regards Henry

Grub NEEDS configureation files stored on your boot partiton to function.
if you move the boot partiton, or delete these config file, you need to re-install grub.

boot a recue / live cd, mount the root partiton somwhere, if you have a seperate boot pattion, moun that to the root partiton boot partiton that you just mounted.

and run
"grub-install --root-directory=/PATH /dev/hdX"
replace X with the disk you want to boot from (porbably a)
replace PATH with the root path

EXAMPLE...

so boot from hard disk primary master, where your root partiton is /dev/hda1, an you do NOT have a seperate boot partiton... do this

mkdir /mnt/ROOT
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/ROOT
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ROOT /dev/hda

OR, if u have a seperate boot partiton..
boot from hard disk primary master, where your root partiton is /dev/hda2, an your boot partiton is /dev/hda1 .. do this

mkdir /mnt/ROOT
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/ROOT
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/ROOT/boot
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ROOT /dev/hda

need more help ? read man grub

Hello again

I have gotten a little bit wiser I think...

My Boot partition is the the Windows drive C: (15GB) - the first partition of 3 on my 80GB IDE HDD...

So part of the problem is that the Suse installation sees my Sata (160GB) as my boot disk...
Under my first installation it labeled it hda, which you say is normally the boot disk...
I then removed the Sata disk after the first unsuccesfull install, and then I tried again...
It failed of course, because it had already fucked up the boot partition the first time...
I realize that now....

I had already repartitioned the 80GB again, when I got you answer...
So I think I will try installing Suse, without the Sata drive this time....

Thanks for your answer....
