Question System Configurations/Need for Adult Leadership

I am a Novice!!!! This is what I have a desktop running WindowsXP a laptop XP I need to keep the Laptop on XP. I have another Desktop that I want to bring over to Linux. My desire is to have all three systems talking to each other and being able to transfer files between them. Both Desktop systems contain SCSI Drives and IDE dives. The IDE drives are the main system drives. I have tried FEDORA and MEMPIS. I like the MEPIS GUI best. I am going to give KUBUNTU, UBUNTU, MANDRIVA, and PCLINUX a look also. I await your suggestions.

Install the Samba packages. On my system the packages are named:
samba-winbind
samba-doc
kdebase3-samba
samba
samba-client

Then look in /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/htmldocs/index.html
or look for documentation in /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/ for three books:
Samba3-ByExample.pdf # On your system it might be a postscript file instead of a pdf file.
Samba3-Developers-Guide.pdf
Samba3-HOWTO.pdf

The Samba3-ByExample book will have sample configurations that you may find useful. You probably will want to use either the 1st or 2nd example in your case. If your XP computers use XP Home, then you cannot use the PDC examples because XP Home can't join a windows domain.

What does what mean? JTShaw moved the thread to a more appropriate forum so people who are looking to answer these types of questions can...

Or do you mean what does Samba mean? If that's it, generally speaking it's a way to share files to a windows network from a Linux network/server/system.

HTH

Cool

Talking Thanks

Thanks for everything. I am going to stay with MEPIS. I found that SAMBA was already installed and it had set things up where all I had to to is link my other computers to this one.

The primary object was to turn this "older" computer into my print server. As you know that when you print it takes almost all of your CPU. I got into a thing with the "other os people" about registering their software. They keep this stuff up and they are going to become an endangered species around here.

You guys are the best help site that I have ever used. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!
