suse 9.1 pro running very slowly after install???

Hello everyone

So I installed suse 9.1 pro on my new laptop yesterday (mobile amd64 3400+, 512 ram, 128MB ati mobility radeon 9600). Winxp on 20 GB partition and linux on 25 GB partition. Install was fine and both operating systems boot from grub.

The problem is that suse 9.1 is dog slow, booting up to linux desktop takes more than 3 mins and once there its all jerky and slow. Running the top command in a terminal window shows that the user me is using 75% of the cpu and the system is using 25%. However, all the processes listed dont show anywhere near this amount.

At first I thought it was the 64 bit os, so I installed the 32 bit version from the cds over it with a default install (no extra software choices). Still the same problem! Updating with all the patches also had no effect.

Anybody have any idea what is going on or how to fix it, I actually shelled out 50 quid for this distro so would prefer to get a fix than simply download another distro. Stupid idiot I know!

Cheers

Dan

Me too!

I have SuSE 9.1 (Installation is 5 CDs) installed on my Laptop(IBM X30, PIII 1G, 512M, 80G) originally, it ran pretty fast originally. But yesterday, I did a online update, and then it is damn slow! And even the sound card doesn't work anymore!
