I'm pretty sure that YaST won't upgrade to a higher version of SuSE, just newer versions of programs built for 8.2.
You could dowload the SuSE9.1 personal .iso for free from the SuSE website, one of the installation options is to upgrade an existing SuSE installation.
Sometimes I find it better to back up my stuff and do a clean install. I didn't have any real issues moving from 8.2 to 9.1 - except DMA is turned on by default for the hard drive, giving me a bad superblock (*sigh*, reinstall) - make sure to turn this off.
If you are using 8.2 pro, be aware that the 9.1 personal edition is pretty stripped down. It only has KDE as the DE, etc. For 1 CD it's a great amount of software, but it is a little limited. I would recommend getting someone to loan you a pro DVD, or installing extra packages with YOU after a personal install.
SuSE 9.1 is a really nice distro, a little speedier than 8.2 and with more eye-candy, so go ahead and install it!
