Searching the Internet for the right Distro...

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a Distro, which comes totaly with any Sowftware like "Wordprozessor or Thunderbird"...

I tried Ubuntu, but there is so much installed I can't remove everxthing.
On Debian (Minimal Install) is not as much as on Ubuntu, but still to much Software installed.

I even tried to install gentoo, but I didn't get the kernel working. (I tried it 5 times, evertime asking the guys in the gentoo-forum.)

Now I'm running a slackware-Distro, but even on this one are 2?! E-Mail Programms installed...

What I need is a Distro, which comes "bare bone" with nothing else as the kernel and some realy importent progs like a simple (terminalbased) texteditor.

But... It shouldn't be to complicated to install...

Hi and welcome to LQ.

You can do a netinstall of Debian, which install just the Debian base and then you can choose to install other packages later on.

The Debian base install doesn't have too much (although it's still close to 200MB). That is mostly tools. If you want an even smaller system, try DSL. If you want a pretty small system but with a GUI, try PuppyLinux. If size really matters and you find even DSL too big, read the Linux From Scratch book and build your own system; I've built a system with numerous tools and is still under 16MB.

You might want to look at Arch. It installs almost nothing by default.

LFS - Linux From Scratch. That shouldn't leave you with too much unnecessary software (if it seems it does, you can opt to leave it out or remove it when not needed anymore as you install).

See LFS website.

Thank you for your replys so far.

I started to read the LFS Book, but I think I've to spend my hole holidays to get through.

Hmmm... I will try out Debian tomorrow...

But if there any other distro, let me know it.
