Redhat 8.0 stalls on transferring install image to hard drive
I am installing Redhat 8.0 on a machine in my house
Athlon 950 Thunderbird
384Mb RAM
AMD Megathon Mobo
Generic Geforce2 card
Maxtor DiamondMax 7Gb HDD
SBLIve! card
D-Link Ethernet Card connect to Cable Modem
I get through everything to install and then -
Redhat 8.0 stalls on the message 'Transferring install image to hard drive'.
No more activity - I can move the mouse and the little watch icon - but nothing is happening.
Any ideas? (I tried 5 times and can't get past this)
Well in that case switch through the virtual consoles and check if there is a strange error message at the end. To switch use CTRL-ALT-F3 ... up till F6 (F7 is the GUI). Post that msg here
I did try a text install, disabling the DMA, everything like that. (I noticed that when disabling the DMA, the installer can't find the hard disk partition tables.) However, I outsmarted Linux and installed it by puting the HD in my roommate's computer! I installed it fine, but the funny thing is that when I try to boot into it on my computer, GRUB runs fine, but when I press enter to load linux, the system immediately restarts!!! And I am about to spend 4 hours doing a search on the internet for why this happens. Wish me luck.
I did a memory test, and a HD test, all were clean. I should also note that Windows 2000 half way through booting makes the hard drive click and go crazy, (Click, click click, ...) I think the MB is shot because the HD works fine in other computer. I think I will replace the MB. Stupid POS, BTW, it is a tyan
Here's the dealio/dillio....Interestingly enough I was getting the same thing w/ similar config (Duron 950 however w/ 384 M).
Saw the ctrl+alt+f2,f3,...f6 post, tres helpful!!!
Saw it was making mention to Gnome-Pallet or some rubbish (yeah why can't they use english?).
Anyhoo, figured Gnome, error, maybe a problem w/ gnome.....
Now I like gnome, not a big fan of KDE,CDE, etc....
But since it's RH8.0 and RH is making all this hype of blue curve and how it is a homogenized feel, figured I'd give it a whirl....
And viola! (sic- have a friend who jokes about this)
It got past this error. UNSELECT GNOME and SELECT KDE. Now I'm not out of the woods yet as the install is still going down, but I figured I'd post this as it looks promising....
I'll notify RH, and maybe find out what I can do (if installing GNOME after the fact doesn't work) and make the most of my $39.99 USD. I couldn't wait to download the ISO....(figure I was an AH to keep my stock after the bubble burst so some of it comes back)
Maybe I can put that cool desktop switcher utility to work as well.
Or wost case I get broaden my WM horizons. Maybe I'll even see some of the other stuff while I'm at it.
Good luck, hope this verbose diatribe helps someone.
I was able to get Linux to successfull install by puting one Hard disk and one CDrom on the 2nd IDE cotroller, since the 1st is dead. I still got the gnome canvas error, but linux installed fine in the graphical mode.
It looks like this error was something independent of my motherboard dying. I am glad that you got around it.
