It's taken 21 hours alone to compile the single kde-base package on my old CPU. I'm hoping the optimizations pay off. I'm fairly patient and my life doesn't depend on this box, so I don't mind investing the time. I might give Linux From Scratch a try if I get a faster box. Sounds quite interesting and a good way to learn from the bottom up.
