Question NIS on Suse 8.2 Pro

I'm running Suse 8.2 Pro and trying out NIS

I can get it to work but I don't understand what to do now

For example, I have setup the server and client and I can query the maps a and logon OK. However, I would like to be able to get the same desktop and home directory from any machine I logon. Do I have to use NFS to accomplish that?

Anyhelp appreciated

I think I'm missing something here on what NIS is supposed to let you do.

What alternatives to NIS are there?

Thanks
