Thumbs up name a few distro with for non pae processor

I stumble upon a mint IBM Pentium M 1.5Ghz with 1Gb ram and 40gb hard drive and want to use it as my everyday computer. I did install Deb 6.0.6 but is slow on the browsing. Will any other more modern distro work out? I really start to be a fan of SL linux 6.x and CentOS 6.x. The 5.x versions are too much out of date and seem odly to use more ram and feel slower then the newer ones.

Salix (Slackware-based) is a possibility: not the latest version 14 with Xfce, but the LXDE one. SolusOS (Debian-based) have a non-pae version with Xfce.

I just put Xubuntu 12.04 on my girlfriend's Gateway laptop that has a pentium dual core 1.6GHz and 1GB of RAM, and it runs very smoothly. IIRC it's also non pae, but I don't think their support for that is going to last.

Pentium M 1.5Ghz is slow for browsing, period. Debian is just about the finest distribution for older hardware, in my opinion. (If you are not already using a "lightweight" UI such as Xfce, Fluxbox, LXDE, etc then give that a try to squeeze a little more "oomph" out of your antiquated hardware.)

For best results I recommend browser add-ons such as: adblock plus, noscript, flash block, etc.

Blocking all the flash animations and scripts should hopefully speed up your perceived browsing experience, good luck!

On the browsing front, that's why I use Opera. There's a quick preferences panel accessed with F12 where you can turn off animation, popups, javascript, plugins: just the thing for those sites with 300 components and video adverts that play themselves.

I'm running antiX on a Dell D600. Seems to work well. Having some issues with SLIM though.
