mandrake 9.1 download site and first impressions

was finally able to get a download site that would not take a couple thousand years, was able to download mandrake 9.1 from this site at a very fast clip of 304 kb/s . http://www.linuxiso.org. was lucky, today was first day i could do anything from the site. also, you need to download all 3 cdroms which each are needed to install 9.l

pros 9.1-

-default look of kde 3.1 blew me away, very appealing
-icon set and font selection also appealing
-without a doubt most polished and professional release of mandrake yet
-superb hardware detection
-wide selection of software is provided
-installation just feels faster
-mandrake control center has seen overhaul again, looks prettier

mandrake 9.1 is a serious and respectable effort from mandrake soft to create a better mandrake linux. obvious that this is not "just another release", it really feels that it had effort put into it.

rating out of 10 , 10 best

installation: 9.5/10
hardware support 7.5/10
ease of use: 7/10
features:7/10
credibility:7/10 (stability, bugs, security)
speed: 8/10

overall rating 8/10

i urge everyone to download 9.1 mandrake and give it try. it,s a worthy distro and espicially this version

when mandrake 9.1 powerpack comes out, i want one -

my 2 cents worh

I agree! ... the upgrade from 9.0 wasn't too great, but a fresh install is SWEET! -- I have it running on my Dell Inspiron 8200 (1.7Ghz/256 Ram). Quick response, clean graphics -- Now I just need to get my WPC11v3 configured properly and I'll be all set!

I have it setup on my laptop now....swwwwwweeeeeeeeeeet

Of course it took 4-5 installs to get it right (between some bugs and my own screw-ups)

I have to say that my big disappointment is that the 9.0 install seemed so much easier and more stable than 9.1, although once in, 9.1 is a LOT better, in style, performance and (so far) stability.

One pet peeve I have, (anyone else notice this?)...I use a pcmcia network card...and in EVERY SINGLE version of Mandrake I've tried, they ALWAYS set up the boot order with network first, THEN pcmcia, which, unless corrected, makes pcmcia freeze on boot...

UGH, what was the thinking there???? ARGH

Of course, quick fix is to be ready for it on first boot, hit interactive startup, say N to network and pcmcia, do your switcheroo and reboot. But it's still a pain.

Otherwise, I am VERY pleased with this version
(DVD playback finally works!!! Yay Xfree 4.3.0!!!!)

switcheroo ???

Hi, I'm quite new to this linux stuff and recently installed Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop (bought the 7 CD's version). Everything seems to run nice exept for my Xircom network pcmcia card ( Now, it doesn't make my computer hang on boot or whatever, but it's as if there where no pcmcia devices or such at all. I'd prefered to see my system hang to be sure some pcmcia controller had been detected. Now I've read something about switching network and pcmcia. What is that ? And how to do that ? And finally what is it for ? Last question but not least, can somebody help me ?

Oh yeah, how can I now there is uberhaupt some pcmcia controller and/or devices working on my system, under Mandrake ?

Damned, all those questions... wish I never started to try installing mandrake... but now I've started I have to finish my work !

By the way, I installed it also on my desktop computer and there
everything just works fine.

PPS : I've found a package called pcmcia-cs or something on the distro, and found out that while running gpccard, it says : "no pcmcia driver present in /proc/devices". How can I instal a suitable pcmcia driver ?? Maybe this should be the solution to all my troubles.
