Mandrake 9.0 Kernel Upgrade Problem

my mandrake 9.0 uses 2.4.19-16mdk kernel
i tried to upgrade it to 2.4.20 vanilla kernel+openmosix patch
i followed the kernel compile HOWTO
make menuconfig && make dep && make clean && make modules && make modules_install
everthing went well
no error during compilation and no module dependency problem either
i also made changes to the lilo.conf and activated the new settings by typing #lilo -v
then reboot
the kernel loaded without any error
but when it hit the "Welcome to Linux" part, i saw some red [fail]s
-modprobe couldn't find char-major-10-135
-bunch of fs: supermount errors
-one devfsd error
and no usb module was loaded (there was a line like "Initializing usb-interface usb-ochp......................[ok]" for the old kernel), that line was missing this time
after logging in
and #startx
i couldn't use the mouse
later though i figured out that i could manually start the usb module by
doing #/etc/init.d/usb start
and mouse became usable in X

How to get rid of those errors and bring up the usb module automaticaly?

Why not try the latest Mandrake kernel, 9.1 ships with 2.4.21-013mdk. You should be able to get the source, probably in rpm format, and install and compile that.

It may be that the failing apps were tweaked to work with the custom Mdk kernel, though I'd hope they work with vanilla ones. I remember 9.0 had a problem reading my 9.1's ext3 partition, or at least running fsck on them, but that may just have been a version difference, not kernel dependancy.

USB support may have been selected as a seperate module, or maybe you removed it all together. Post the file which specifies the kernel compiling options.

I need to apply the openmosix patch

there isn't a specific mdk openmosix kernel rpm availiable for download, so according to openmosix HOWTO, i have to patch, configure and build the kernel manually.

Unfortuately, the new kernel some how doesn't like PPP
so i can't use the system to get online
i have a HCF modem and i have compiled and installed the appropriate driver, it worked fine for the old kernel, but it doesn't for the new kernel. After I got logged on my ISP, PPP always died unexpectedly, and the log said "Couldn't set tty to PPP discipline".
I don't know what exactly it means, so i have to use Windows XP to post this messeage.
I don't know if anyone could help me on that.

Anywayz, usb and other app errors are minor, but the PPP one is urgent

The good thing though is that openmosix works

You can't use the Mandrake 9.1 kernel sources because they require a newer version of gcc.
If you really want to upgrade the kernel that badly, I suggest you just get the Mandrake 9.1 cds and install it. I'm running 9.0, have been for awhile, and I can't see much reason to go to 9.1, but I probably will anyway.
