Linux without X window

Hi, I have been trying to install linux for a long time now. I have tried Mandriva and Ubuntu so far. Every time i get an error message
from the X window, saying there is an error and something is not setup correctly. I have been looking for a linux distribrution that does not use the X window. Do any of you guys know of one?

X is necessary if you want to display a graphical user interface (GUI). If you are content with just a command prompt, check out debian or another linux distro that gives you more control over the installation. Also, try a live cd like knoppix or kanotix.

Any distro can be text only. On most distros just change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 4 or 5 to 3. As for the problem with X, maybe you need to manually reconfigure the graphics card. On Mandriva you can use xfdrake and on Ubuntu "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". You can also use xorgconfig on both distros.

what (s)he ment to say, that you should uncheck the x installation (including KDE and GNOME), then you'll get command promt only (common for every linux distro), but i sugest to try out suse (i use 9.3), i installed on 6 machines, starting 300Mhz PII ending Athlon 64 3200+, and the x and linux just worked fine... if you want to get familiar with linux, then suse and fedora are among the best user friendly linux distro's.

Thanks for the help. I tried what reddazz said, but it still won't display a gui.

if you want to get any useful help you should post: your distro, your hardware configuration, what errors you get, and you should post in appropriate forum. i am saying this just for the future...

Hey there, i just got latest Ubuntu version and tried "live" disk, however it comes up with the error message about the graphical interface and some more stuff about the "X Server" what can i do to resolve this problem? also please try to explain in slightly more laymans term as i am a

Please make a new thread for this. Also, give more details about your problem (like the exact error messages), as right now it's very vague.
