kernel-2.6.8.1 in suse-9.1?
is there kernel-2.6.8.1 in suse-9.1 in rpm format? i tried compiling but to no avail

SuSE have quite a few custom patches on their kernels. You should really stck to the yast2 repository for kernel upgrades or else you can get into instability problems. You should still be able to compile a kernel from scratch if you want, so who knows why yours failed, you would have to post the errors.
