KDM freezes after logging out (Mandriva 2008)

Hello to everyone, and this is my first post.

I prefer Mandriva, as one of few distribution which (as yet?) still uses rpm, instead of debian. But this problem drives me really crazy, and I might switch to kubuntu after all

Every time after I log off, something weird happens. Typically the system freezes, and doesn't accept anything apart from Ctrl+Alt+Del, after which it goes to reboot.

While it is frozen, I can see a blank screen with text cursor, therefore I assume that it happens after finishing X-session, but before login screen takes over. It might be an application running in between which causes the upset, but I don't know where to look for.

The problem happens only when I use a manufacturer driver for my video card: fglrx (ATI Radeon X1300). With vesa and avivo everything is OK, but only fglrx supports graphic acceleration. Also it works OK with fglrx when I use XDM as display manager.

I installed a fglrx version, and recompiled the kernel to ensure that the fglrx_ko fits in, and I certainly use a new version of libGM (from /usr/lib/fglrx), but it has become even worse.

Any help? You will really make my day ...

As stop gap you might open a terminal (<F2>-<F6>) log in as root and execute
Code:
shutdown -h now
You can search there for any x-processes too:
Code:
ps ax | grep X

Thanks JZL

Actually Shut Down and Restart work perfectly well. The only problem is with End Session.

I fixed the problem though I disabled "Splash=silent" in lilo.
Now when the system starts up I see messages instead of Mandriva splash screen, and the log out problem has gone!

Don't ask me how the splash screen could upset the End Session, this is something I will never figure out. But I prefer to see messages instead of splash screen anyway. After all we are not in Windows

Well, in the original post you said the box is freezing, that's why I suggested an other terminal.

Good for you. I can't imagine the workings either, sorry.
