hmm, in xwindows run gnorpm for rpms, in the command line i'm not sure exactly how, but try "man rpm" without the quotes, the man command (man man) will give you the manual pages built into the computer, but you have to know what you are looking for info on, in xwindows try xman, that does have an index, to get it, run xman (in xwindows), click the "manual page" button, when the window opens, select the "options" menu and choose "Display directory"
since you are a super newbie, to get into x windows, type startx or init 5 at the prompt (while logged on as root)
you should, perhaps have to be logged on as root to install rpms, as they can put stuff into directories you don't want normal users accessing, and could lead to access denied errors
Just to add-on for specifics. Downloading in Linux isn't any different than Windows really. Run Netscape or Konqueror or Mozilla. Whatever browser you like most after you've logged in to your ISP. Go to the website, download the .rpm file (not the .src.rpm unless you wanna do extra stuff) to whatever dir you want, make a special one for downloads or something you'll remember. Then to install the RPM, open a konsole window, cd to whatever directory you saved the file to and type rpm -ivh nameof-file.rpm. It installs and there yuh be. I'd suggest leavng the GUI or Xwindows based installer alone, it's a pain and doesn't always work right...
OK Im also newbie at Linux....First install...It seemed successful...I can see the world.....I have installed RTCW and the program works. The problem is that when I set up a server for Wolfenstein, I cannot connect even though it shows up on idsoftwares master list....I am running RedHat 7.0. The problem seems to be that it is refusing connections on port 29760 (the default for wolfenstein servers)...Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am not sure if this is a Linux configuration issue or an issue that is related to Wolfenstein itself.....Thanks in advance...
Is xinetd my answer....?And if so, how do I allow traffic on the correct port....?
RPMs are actually really great. You can use RPMDrake to find your RPMs, etc, or the command line. Quite simply, if you want to find out if you 've got an RPM use:
