I have got rid of my SuSE 9.1 installation and am trying gentoo, but keep getting stuck on the install. Ive read the handbook and many other documentations on the gentoo installation and am confused on the installation steps. I usually get to the point after unpacking the portage system when Im looking at the handbook, and this article and that article and there all say to do something diferant and only do this if your doing a stage one ect... Ahh...I need some help. I was wondering if someone could walk me through how they did it, or show me a good article that shows how to do a stage 3 install from the live cd with some explanation. I have looked through the handbook and understand it, but get confused on all the alternate steps and stuff. I just need something that will walk me through a stage3 install and show me exactly what I need to do without printing out the 60 some odd page handbook or a quick installation guide that doesnt explaine any of the steps. Any help will be greatly apreciated.
Thanks,
Dan
ps. Although I know some linux basics (I have used it for about a year now like RedHat and SuSE) I am still somewhat of a n00b, and this gentoo installation seems to be the hardest thing Ive ever done. Mabey its just me.
I just installed Gentoo from the live CD and it was a bit harder than I had anticipated but after 3 attempts, I got it right.
You really need to print out the manual and follow each step to the letter. Read over it a time or two, and try very hard to think out what you are doing with each step. Put an X or some other mark on the steps that won't apply to your situation, then try and try again at installing until you get it. That's what I did and it finally worked. Understand that once things start compiling, it will take a really long time for the full installation to complete. It took my machine over 10 hours just to compile KDE after getting the base install up and running.
It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done under Linux, but it was a real learning experience. Good luck...
that's odd, and im being honest here, i think installing gentoo isn't as hard as what people make it out to be, sure it takes long! i got stuck on my first attempt, but having read what the handbook says, it all makes sense.
the best advice i can give is to print out the handbook, print out something on /etc/fstab, and some things on compiling a 2.6.x kernel (if u arent going for a genkernel). that way u have everything at hand to get u through, im not expert and im no noob, but my level on linux now has definately improved after using gentoo.
i hope my advice makes sense, not trying to brag either, thats just the way i've experienced it!
u may also want to use irssi on the livecd and connect to irc.freenode.net and join #gentoo, plenty people join there while installing to seek help, and the poeple there do help.
take care, michael.
ps: u have link2 which is a text browser on the livecd too
yes i've struggled over installing Gentoo on my 4 machines(xbox version went in the easiest lol) but i've noticed when botting kernels off the live CD the SMP 2.6 kernel to be a better starting choice over the Gentoo 2.4 kernel.. i dunno about you guys this is my opinion. i found to have like no problems installing gentoo, with that kernel.. just graphics problems, sound probelms after the install which are a common thing i've seen
