Smile Gaming distro and emulators

I am looking to install a light(er) version of linux on an old HP laptop that currently runs mint. Looking to get into some gaming but want to play the older game systems. Im not familiar but what my research show me as far as gaming goes is to run an "emulator" for the game platform. Are they stand alone os's? or do you need an OS? if so will a lighter distribution of linux work? What is most popular version of a light distro that would suit my needs

Use RetroArch for emulation.

They provide PPAs that work with Ubuntu-based distros.

An emulator is a program. You start it like you would any executable, you load the game into it, and you run it.

As for lightweight Ubuntu-based distros: I don't have personal experience, but Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Peppermint OS, and LXLE are names I know of. There's also Lakka, but that's more for settop boxes.
