Every Slacker's favorite distro...

It Looks like not only shall the next edition of Slack be called 8.1, but that Patrick has gone berserk in current and has upgraded just about everything.

Support for ext3 and xfs! Is this a change from the usual Slackware stance of "Don't release it until it can deflect the 7mm round"?

Getting my news off of slackware.com is getting rather tedious, do any of the rest of you slacker's know what site/list/forum/frequency of SW I can find out more about Slack now that their forum is toast?

Cheers,

Finegan

Wow, you know I don't check Slack's site as often as I should or I guess this would have been less of a shock. I think the progression of Slack will need to incorporate alot of the newer filesystems to keep up. As far as 8.1, I have to say i'm surprised, I would expect if he's making such dramatic changes in almost every package he would step it up a little, but hey, i'm looking forward to it. I do hope it can ward off a 7mm round before he releases it though...

I am obviously not the best at keeping up to date, so I can't say as that I know what a better Slack resource may be. Sorry...I don't even watch much t.v.

Yeah actually I wouldn't mind seeing a Slack sub forum like the LFS, where Patrick would post some input here, even though I know he has got to be as busy as Beekmans.

Jeremy, did any other distro ever contact you for adding any distro specific where a maintainer would overlook it ?

not to make it sound too mercenary (altho i don't see what's too wrong with that where slack is concerned )... but could it be about market share?

anway, what's wrong with ext3? it's just ext2 with a file journaling system right? Patrick is probably still thinking of deflecting the 7mm round, not a nuclear holocaust ... just my opinion... perhaps if i knew more about Linux and Slack, i'd be in a better position to say something... as it is, this is my ill-informed post...

There should *hopefully* be a few more projects coming on very soon.

You know, a while back someone started a thread on why you started posting here, and now I remember. I was posting on the Slack forums, which still had live threads going on after the forum was pinched off, and I was complaining about it on one I was subscribed to, and some guy, I wonder which, pointed me to a thread here! Then I remembered that I had signed up here!

Also, ext3, when RedHat put it into operation as the default FS for 7.2, was probably not the brightest idea. In the newest kernel, 2.4.18, it still has the word EXPERIMENTAL after it. I can understand an untested gcc or glibc even, but not the filesystem, that's makes everything toast if it goes kazoo. Then again, I'm a wimp.

Jeremy, if you could get a sub-forum for Slack, that would be phenomenal.

Luck,

Finegan

I agree, it would be great if we could get a Slack forum here, and I'm trying as we speak (err... type).

Also, from the 2.4.19-pre6 Changelog:
- Removed the EXPERIMENTAL mark of fs/Config.in ext3 entry.

I found yesterday that www.linuxpackages.net (former linuxmafia), has a half-way decent Slack forum. It's the only one i've been able to find since the closing of Patrick's forum.

I am really going to try to get Slackware onboard. Might take some work though. Do you think there is enough interest / would you guys be interested in a Slackware forum either way?
