I have been playing with other distros lately and found Elx Linux to be the best "new" release. I've been using Mandrake 8.1 regularly, but may switch to Elx when they release a 1.0 (current is pre1). It's a very organized distro with good tools and wealth of applications.
I'm playing with SuSE right now, and while it's interesting from a learning point of view I don't think it's as user-friendly as Windows. I'd like to have a second distro, like ELX, for ease of use. While working with ELX, have you found that it's as easy as Windows? And, have you tried installing any apps beyond what the vendor supplied? If so, how did that go?
I just installed elx and finally got on the internet with it(I had to disable pnp os in the bios) Now I'd like to install a firewall. I downloaded one it came zipped inside is a .raw file. How do I install this, I'm completely new to linux hence I'm clueless. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx , vektor
also, to the person above, it sounds like you downloaded a firewall-on-a-lfoppy distro.
this wont be much good to you unless you want to run a standalone firewall box.
a good direwall script for kernel (iptables)2.4 is gShield. all you have to do is edit a simple script and run it.
A good gui based one is http://firestarter.sourceforge.net. althought this requires gnome devel stuff to be installed, it is by far the easiest firewall config program i have even seen, to the point that it rivals some of the simpler windows based ones in terms of ease of use.
Thx Sickboy In the control panel of elx is an icon for firestarter
it appears that it was/is meant to be integrated into elx the only other distro's that I've delt with are mandrake ans solaris and these only breifly I have suse 7.3 and installed it qiute a few times!! But it wouldn't see my gforce3 card. neither would mandrake or sun but ELX does and it'q quite sweet...right click context menu's. once linux becomes a little les mystifying for me I'm sure I'll find it's easy to use. This install was by far the most brainless of all. Hopefully more people will start running it. Why don't they put executable installs in linux? I like it and will try fire starter http://elxlinux.com/ is where you can dowload it. Have funthx for the tips.
