hello,
i converted a few years ago and i've started to use linux like people use windows. i don't have time to tinker any more...
but recently i have had some problems and want to try something new....
i tryed FC but hated it because i couldn't configure my network, no ifconfig or anything. so i quickly reinstalled mandrake :-p
not i've tryed to download suse but it wants me to do some boot leg cd dvd dealy??? i'm lazy sorry
and as for ubuntu or kununtu i hear alot about it but my burner crapped out last time i had the time to try a new distro... so... the question...
i not have a bit of time and i'm trying to decide what to use... i want:
console tools, i hate gui's they are slow and the reason i quit using windows.
configureablaity, i was dissapointed at fc's boot leg mystarius configure tools, mandrake all-in-one tool is where its at!
ease of installation and setup. i'm done configureing hardware(sound cards, tv cards, etc), thats for people with time.
also it has to run MythTv with out and jumping though hoops ( i can install it in minutes on mandrake no counting compilation times ), i haven't watched commercials in years lol
and last but the GREATEST REQUIREMENT!!! MUST HAVE FULL LIB's i am tired of haveing to reinstall libs because mandrake/mandriva puts them in there custom place. so in other words i sound have pkg-config working fully for gnome/gtk software, and like wise KDE/Qt libs easily find able by any!! configure script
Slackware sounds like the distro for you. It still has a GUI for ease of use, but relys alot on the written commands in the terminal. Slackware also alows for alot of customation while still providing a doable install. Gentoo provides the most customization i've ever seen short of LFS, but the install extremely intensive. I've never heard anyone complain about the library setup in Slackware either. Give it a try, especially since you've already ruled the top 2 or 3 distros right off the bat lol! (i.e. Fedora, Ubuntu, and Mandrake)
slackware eh? well it is one of the first distros i have ever heard of ( i think i downloaded it once when i was first starting out and the download was like 36 megs or something )
whelp i think it's about time i try it
thanks!
try arch. one config file for everything (/etc/rc.conf), system upgrades with one command (pacman -Syu and you're done) -- it's the easiest to use (and maintain) distro i've ever used.
