I wouldn't. Installing a superceeded distro is inviting trouble as it is no longer maintained (i.e. security fixes are a little short on the ground).

Far better to go with a bottom up distro like Debian or Slack.

ok then...

I'd go for Slack then, although Redhat is still appealing, due to the RPM packaging, or does Slack have that?

/me really has to try Slack one day....

might give Debian a try as well....

ok, thanks Aussie (Bern from OCAU, right?)

I haven't tried Slack yet, so I'm not 100% sure what it supports in term of packages....

would the .tgz be the same as .tar.gz?

I don't really like installing programs from the .tar.gz package, it almost always seems to stuff up for me...

Ok, I'm still a Linux newbie......

I need to do some more ....

tgz is the same as tar.gz, but Slack packages are binary not source code.

Slack has (I hear) a policy of "Edit all config files manaully" which is why I prefer Debian.

Thumbs up older computer and suse7.1

my old PC is a P75! running win98 & SUSE 7.1 to my satisfaction (I'm no expert) but I boot from a floppy to avoid problems.KDE is reasonably like win98 in use as a simple user, the installation let me choose what I wanted and ran almost on "automatic",with one exception my printer is a HP660C and the installed driver was incorrect, but that was the only problem!
