XEmacs deleting/overwriting selected text

Does anybody know how to setup XEmacs to delete/overwrite selected text(the way things are done in just about every other program). With emacs I used to be able to put (delete-selection-mode t) in my .emacs file, but that does not seem to work for XEmacs. When I do that I get the following error when I start XEamcs:

(1) (initialization/error) An error has occurred while loading nil:

Symbol's function definition is void: delete-selection-mode

To ensure normal operation, you should investigate the cause of the error
in your initialization file and remove it. Use the `-debug-init' option
to XEmacs to view a complete error backtrace.

It seems like this should be an easy to find option in the Options menu, but I don't see it. Thanks in advance for the help.

Overwrite mode in xemacs - maybe it's pending-delete related

I first tried Options -> Editing -> Overstrike
and that didn't work. Then I found through googling
the following command for the .emacs file:

(pending-delete-mode 1)

My .emacs file already had this:

(require 'pending-del)
