x11vnc, gdm, connect to any session

I run x11vnc on all X session. I'm also using GDM. Unfortunately, I can only ever connect (via tightvnc) to the active x session -- whichever one is currently showing on the physical monitor. The other ones usually just show a black screen with a mouse.

Why is this?

Is there a way that I can connect to any session?

Unfortunately, I don't think it can be done because the non-active X server is not allowed to retrieve the pixels from the hardware framebuffer:

I search google groups for 'x11vnc' about once or twice a week.
