X server crash recovery

Perhaps this is a stupid question. But is there any way - any at all - to restart the Xorg server without losing all the graphical apps that were running at the time? X crashes are probably the biggest PITA factor on Linux, and not losing everything that was running would certainly take a lot of the pain out of them.

Sorry...no. Everything graphical running in Xorg, dies with it. Had the same here, switched to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1 - that stil did work) and did a "reboot" as Root. Of course, doing a "pkill" adter a "ps -A" would allow the application to take action, if it could do that. A pkill is pretty ... final...

And...no, it's not a stupid question...stupid questions dont exist...

I have been using X for years and it has never crashed. This is one of the reasons I like it.

What distro / version of X are you running?
