Unhappy Weird control key animation and behavior

My control key started displaying shrinking alternate square and diamond shapes when it is released. It takes about a quarter second for the "cute" animation to finish and disappear. After this started, the desktop-switching shortcut (ctrl-F1 etc) needs to be done twice. If an xterm has keyboard focus, the key after ESC that F1 etc generates is "conveniently" emitted to the xterm.

How do I turn this off?

I use KDE 3.5.4-26 on CentOS 5.7 (release 2.6.18-274.7.1) on x86_64.
