Hi
My laptop uses ubuntu 11. It has no longer support or security updates. It actually works perfect, as it is a little bit old (2gb ram athlon processor)
But I'm thinking of upgrading to ubuntu 13 or switching to linux mint, as so many positive comments are around. I don't really find unity very attractive, but I've never tried mint.
Could you share your opinion about which distro likes you the most?
Just for your informatin, there is no 'ubuntu 11' release. Ubuntu releases are always XX.XX, e.g. 11.04. The format is year.month of the release (11.04 was out in april 2011).
If you were using 11.04 with 'Ubuntu Classic' or 11.10 with the gnome 2.X desktop, then Mint MATE would be closer to what you are used to than ubuntu 13.XX releases. After 11.10, the old gnoem 2.X desktop was discontinued with ubuntu, and its been replaced with 'unity', a different desktop enviroment. Its quite different to the old gnome 2.X desktop, and uses a fair bit more resources.
MATE is a fork of the old gnome 2.X desktop.
I wouldnt upgrade to Mint 14/15 or a ubuntu 13.XX release if you let a ubutnu 11.XX version get that far out of support. Ubuntu 13.04 and all 'non-LTS' versions after it only have 9 months support. Same for Mint 15 and later.
Get a LTS release, ubuntu 12.04 or Mint 13, whichever way you go.
If you have VirtualBox installed on your current Ubuntu, you could download each iso to test that way.
If you go for Mint, the Mint 13 release will probably be better to test as it will be supported until April, 2017 while Mint 15 support ends in January, 2014.
I've installed both, and tested last night.
I'll keep linux mint, as it seems to work a little bit faster than ubuntu, and looks very familiar.
Unity looks very modern, but messy as well.
Xubuntu made the perfect choice. Linux mint and Ubuntu constantly crashed and gave me lot's of kernel panics.
I tried lubuntu and xubuntu, and both work like charm. But xubuntu looks nicer...
