transcoding video to quicktime

I work at a multimedia company where most people work on Mac OS X, but I use ubuntu linux at work a lot, and I work at home a lot, where ubuntu is my only OS. I need to be able to transcode video files from MPEG-2 and 4, and also hopefully straight from DVD to quicktime format, readable by apple quicktime (without divx or any other plugins that my co-workers never bother with). I can get good MPEG-2 VOBs with DVD::Rip, but can't transcode the files.

I have done my best to get there with Cinelerra, and command-line ffmpeg and mencoder.

Cinelerra quits as soon as I start rendering to quicktime4linux, leaving behind a .mov with the requested filename, but which is less than 1KB - clearly not the answer.

I know that ffmpeg is capable of doing the transcoding I need, because I can do it with ffmpegX on OS X using ffmpeg as the codec library. When I tried it from the command line in linux, I got the following:
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i movie.vob movie.mov
FFmpeg version CVS, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard
  configuration:  --prefix=/usr --libdir=${prefix}/lib --incdir=${prefix}/include/ffmpeg --enable-shared --enable-mp3lame --enable-gpl --enable-faad --mandir=${prefix}/share/man --enable-vorbis --enable-pthreads --enable-faac --enable-xvid --enable-dts --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb --enable-pp --enable-libogg --enable-a52 --enable-theora --enable-libgsm --enable-x264 --enable-a52bin

  libavcodec version: 51.9.0
  libavformat version: 50.4.0

And with mencoder I got the following:
Code:

I will be happy to find out what I am doing wrong in any of these three programs, but I'd ultimately like to learn to use all three.

Thanks in advance,

yes, but only with an extra plugin, such as divx, and even then editing the file with quicktime pro isn't supported. Ultimately, even if I can rip and edit avi or mpg files, I still need to convert them to quicktime at some point because I am a lowly production assistant and everybody in this office uses quicktime format on macs.
