I'm trying to get the above streaming audio cast to play on my DT. With Amarok I get “Error loading media” message which suggests I need to add/apt-get something the site can talk to. With Mplayer and Noaatun I get bupkiss.
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to media/linux.

You will be downloading a playlist rather than an mp3 file. Copy the shortcut and add it to Radio Streams.
If you can play MP3s you shouldn't have a problem. I tested it out in Amarok 1.3. The version of Amarok that is packaged with many distros may not be built for mp3's. You may need to install amarok from an alternate repo, such as Packman for SuSE or RPMFusion for Fedora. Xmms should also be able to play playlists.
Can I do an “apt-get upgrade” to amarok to 2.0 ... or something?
Code:
~$ apt-cache search amarok
amarok - versatile and easy to use audio player for KDE
amarok-engines - output engines for the Amarok audio player
amarok-xine - xine engine for the Amarok audio player
kopete - instant messenger for KDE
lineak-kdeplugins - LinEAK KDE plugins
vorbisgain - add Replay Gain volume tags to Ogg Vorbis files
xmms-kde - MP3 player integrated into the KDE panel

Or use vlc
In a terminal:<snip>
I don't seem to have vlc installed. Either that or I'm not configured so's amarok can find it.
The "amarok 1.3" was a typo. I normally use the same amarok version you do, but I needed to install it from the "packman" repository so it would play mp3's. I also needed libxine from the sam repo, because it is the backend. The sticky on top of the debian forum page may give instructions on which repo you need for debian.
I added the url to Playlists -> Radio Streams.
It was a very funny British program I listened to. Thanks.
Installed vlc, ran in terminal, found uri in playlist, but nothing happens when I open dialog box and click “play”.
In terminal I see:
Code:
~$ vlc http://goons.fabcat.org/64.pls
VLC media player 0.8.6a Janus

I thought to try another stream, BostonPete. The site does state vlc is recommended. But it also says “VLC Media Player is missing”.
I'm obviously in need of a clue on how to make vlc work.
~$ apt-cache search realplayer
kmplayer-plugin - kmplayer plugin for khtml/konqueror
mplayer - The Movie Player

Either the alleged “sticky” came unstuck from the debian forum page(s) or you are thinking about a different forum. I can't find it. http://forums.debian.net/index.php
I hope you aren't thinking openSUSE. The only repos for Amarok from packman I can find relate to debian Suse. I'm running Etch on an i-386 processor and use apt-get. AFAICT, the Contents for i-386 in the Packman list of repos is empty.
<http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/mirrors/packman/debian/dists/etch/?order=N>
I'm sure a search on this site would turn up others.
I was using packman as an example of what "I needed" to add. For i386, you may need to build amarok yourself. Also, beware of libraries used for media being built using pentium/athlon media extensions.
...errr... the point is: that's not what you wrote. You cited the “debian forum”.

Indeed; but how is that helpful; exactly? I've been there. As I stated, I already have
Amarok installed... so what criteria do I need to .list a repo that has whatever it is my installation is missing?

I don't want to seem impolite, but I have to say I'm more than a little annoyed. You've got me traipsing after phantoms. I spent 3-4 hours trying to figure out what “packman” had to offer apropos my OS. Why would anyone care what 'you needed' if you're “examples” are peculiar to an entirely different distro?

Riiight. I'll do that just as soon as I degauss the fragistat on my gnoortiphone. Unless I'm way out to lunch, my query was aimed at getting answers “a complete newbie when it comes to media/linux” could understand and hope to apply.
All I'm learning from you is; “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”
Woof!! After a lot of digging, it seems I need to "Compile" vlc. That's way over my head... esp. upon reading:<http://wiki.videolan.org/UnixCompile>
Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places, but most of the bumph I can find on vlc by googling is peculiar to Ubuntu enthusiasts. What I can find apropos Debian/GNU etch suggests I need libxine1-ffmpeg,libcdio,libvcdinfo ... and on and on. It also seems these 'libs' are available from multiverse repos... but not from any of my sources.
I don't mind learning. But after reading some of the horror stories about messing up Desktops and Laptops by d/ling 'libs' from unsupported repos, I don't think I'm technically competent to venture down that path.
If you can suggest something fairly simple (or at least straightforward) to get vlc to handle streaming audio, I'll give it a go. But as it stands, I just don't feel I'm up to the task on my own.
Debian oldstable (etch)
A version (0.8.6) is packaged in etch. However, if you want libdvdcss (DVD decryption) support, you will need to add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
# deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian etch main
# deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian etch main
[Done rws 10.09.09]
For a normal install, do:
# apt-get update
# apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2
Some errata appeared when I did the #apt-get update (below) that concern me. Just to allay my paranoia about d/ling stuff I don't really understand, perhaps you can comment before I do the install.
Apropos GPG error “NO_PUBKEY 07DC563D1F41B907” it seems I can solve than from: <http://debian-multimedia.org/faq.php>

Q. Why apt-get doesn't find this public key : NO_PUBKEY 07DC563D1F41B907 ?
A. Install the debian-multimedia-keyring package with "dpkg -i debian-multimedia-keyring_2008.10.16_all.deb" (click on the link above to download the package).
And then do an 'apt-get update'.
Code:
# apt-get update
