Squeeze's Freezes

I recently installed Squeeze from an netinst DVD:
'Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.4 _Squeeze_ - Official i386 kde-CD Binary-1 20120128-12:53'

Among other problems, I've been having persistent screen freezes during which the only thing that works is my mouse cursor; it can be moved around but clicking anywhere on the screen doesn't activate anything. The keyboard is also rendered non-functional. The only thing I can do is a hard-shut-down-restart.

As far as when these freezes occur, I can't point to any one thing. Sometimes when I click on the 'Restore' or 'Minimize' buttons on Konqueror, trying to scroll up or down a window using the mouse/cursor, or calling up a new application using the mouse; e.g., click on kwallet ...the window only partially appears and the screen is frozen as tight as a cannonball.

I don't know it it is relevant, but here's the tail end of my '/.xsession-errors' file.

Code:
 /.xsession-errors <snip>

I'd appreciate any help diagnosing this problem and finding a fix.

List your hardware.

Squeeze can have problems with hardware released after it was (eg, 'sandy bridge' video).

just off chance, are you using compiz? I used to run squeeze and found it suffered similar problems as you described after I installed and began running compiz.

+1 to Knightron, if you've running compiz then try shutting it down.

It could also be a i845 video problem. I dont have an i845 motherboard to test with, sorry, so I cant be sure its the problem. I've seen enough people with issues with i845 video that I think is likely though.

A cheap AGP card (ATI/AMD or nVidia) should fix the problem if its caused by i845 video.

If y'all are responding to me, I have no idea about 'compiz' or 'i845 video'. All I know about video 'cards' is what I entered above: "Video: Intel Extreme Graphics 3D 64MB DDR Shared memoryVideo:"

Compiz is a 'compositor' for running desktop effects. Its not used in KDE normally, KDE uses 'Kwin'.

"Intel Extreme Graphics 3D" is i8XX onboard video, and i740 video cards. There are minor differences between i740, i810/i815, i845 and i865 video chips. Since you haev an i845 chipset, you have i845 video, and so people use 'i845 video' to make thing clearer (and avoid typing t fullhe marketing title 'Intel Extreme Graphics')

I dont remember if I tried using KDE 4 with anything as bad as i845 video. It was pretty awful with faster video chips/GPUs than i845 video. It wasn much fun with 512MB either.

Maybe you should try the Xfce or Lxde desktops. It should be pretty easy to do, just 'apt-get install xfce4' or 'apt-get install lxde'. Or you can install it from synaptic package manager if you prefer to do everything from a GUI. Once you have Xfce/lxde, log out (or reboot), and at the login screen change from a KDE 4 session to Xfce or Lxde session.

Be warned, there can be minor problems with Xfce4 and KDE 4 installed. All those problems normally cause is minor graphical glitches, eg stuff like the desktop background is gone. Rebooting into the same desktop (eg, rebooting back into Xfce4 when Xfce4 had the problem) normally fixes it.

You could also remove KDE pretty easily in a similar way to how you installed xfce4/lxde.
