Shutdown fails in linux mint 20.1

Hi All,

Old desktop upgraded with more RAM: now ddr3 1333MHz 4 GBytes and with SSD Kingston 240 GB.

Installed MINT 20.1 which runs good. But one problem: Shutdown fails in normal shutdown menu. Power LED stays on and fans keep turning.

I tried in terminal: sudo systemctl halt; sudo systemctl poweroff; sudo shutdown (1 min delay); shutdown --poweroff now
All with the same result: it starts but hang in a black screen with only the MINT logo, power LED on and fans turning.

Using restart in the shutdown menu works fine including a short moment that the power LED is off.

This distribution uses systemd.

Details:
Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon 4.8.6
Kernel 5.4.0-72-generic
Intel Pentium G860 3 GHz dual core
Chipset BD82H61
RAM 3.7 GB
SSD 241.1 GB
GPU Intel 2e gen core processor fam integrated graphics controller

I stumbled around with some BIOS settings but with no avail

After searching and trying for 2 days your help will be appreciated very much!

Thanx in advance,

Harry Croon

Do you see any failure mode clues in:
Code:
sudo journalctl -b -1
???

Have you tried this?

Code:
shutdown now -h
That works for me in my VM of Mint.

In fact, that works for me with almost everything.

@ mrmazda

Thank you for your reply!
I don't see any suspect text in this log or it should be "NX (Execute Disable) protection: active"

I also tried sudo poweroff -f. Then there is a responds in the terminal "Powering off" which stays on the screen and no black screen is shown.

Regards,
Harry

@ frankbell

Thank you for your reply.

I did and the responds in the terminal is "Powering off" staying on the screen whereas there is no further progression to the black screen.

Also sudo poweroff -f gives this same behavior.

Regards,

Harry

That message you should google for. I don't remember ever seeing it. If you upload the journal possibly someone could spot something:
Code:
journalctl -b -1 | susepaste

I gave the same command in the terminal of my laptop, which is powering off perfectly, and encountered the same phrase. So it is very unlikely that this is the cause of the trouble.
To morrow I will start up the failing computer and upload the log text.

Solved

I tried some live OS-es and the shut down was perfect. So I did a fresh install of MINT 20.1 and it switch off normally. Also during tweaking I check after each step whether the shut off worked. Now the problem has goen!!!
Thx for your support.

Harry
