Hi Seaumas2, i can't point you to a manual but i can help you out.
I am not familiar with Kubuntu, but Kubuntu uses kde, and i am very familiar with kde.
Kde has a unique feature called activities. Personally i don't use this feature to it's full capacity.
You can completely change the way your desktop environment works through activities.
You can view your activities by right clicking your desktop and then selecting 'activities' from within the context menu.
By default on most distros, kde is setup to use an activity called desktop icons.
The name is not very well suited, because you can not have desktop icons on it in the traditional sense. This activity is setup to work primarily with widgets. If you right click the desktop, select 'unlock widgets' and then drag an icon of an application from the menu over to the desktop, it will put an icon there, but it is in the form of a widget. It is resizable, and will have it's own widget menu. I personally use this activity on my own computer.
While the widgets are unlocked, if you right click the desktop and select 'add widget', a menu will display a the bottom with a selection of widgets you might like. If you select one called, 'folder view', this will put a little rectangle on the screen with icons displayed with in it. You can make this display your desktop folder, which is what is what used to be setup on default.
In case you are unaware, your desktop icons are only shortcuts to foo applications, and these shortcuts are located in the directory ~/Desktop.
If you don't have a ~/Desktop folder then you will want to make one. By the way, '~/' means your home folder, so '/home/<username>/Desktop'.
Anyway, if you would prefer to not work primarily with widgets and instead use a more traditional approach, reminiscent of Gnome's or Xfce4's desktop icon behavior, then you can accomplish this by changing the activity.
like i mentioned earlier, right click the desktop and select 'activities'. A menu in a similar structure to the widget menu will appear.
It will have one, and maybe more icons on the menu. These are all the activities present on your system. I usually delete all of them except the one i'm using. If you don't have one with the required setting, you need to go to the menu and select create new activity. There is an option called 'pre-sets' or something similar, go to that and you need to select the activity called 'folder view'.
This makes your entire desktop work like the folder view widget i mentioned; which is exactly like Gnome's and Xfce4s desktop.
Once you've done this and opened your new activity. You can still add widgets like before, but now, every shortcut in your ~/Desktop directory will be on your desktop.
If you drag an icon from the menu, to the desktop, it will no longer create a widget, but instead give you the option to make a shortcut, icon there.
Any more questions to do with kde, i'll be happy to help.
