Screen freezes

Using Debian etch 4.0
Sometimes my screen will freeze. Looks like there is a curtain drawn across the monitor. I have to reboot to get out of this.

Can someone tell me what this problem is?
I'm not sure if this is a software of a problem with my computer.

I don't know what's causing the freeze-up. I don't think a reboot isnecessary. Try ctrl + alt + backspace to restart the X server and log back in. It's much faster than reboot.
