restoring grub bootloader

The hard drive will not boot. I have tried super grub disk to boot opensuse 11.1 and to restore grub to mbr. No success. I can mount the drive with a live disk and all the files are ok. Grub file is located in /boot/grub/menu.lst. I must be using super grub disk incorrectly. I am sure the boot loader is installed on the mbr and the menu.lst is in sda2. I tried repairing grub and installing to both partition and mbr.

If I upgrade opensuse to 13.1, can I keep sda3 and my home folder data?

Just a question about your version of grub:
Is your stuff in menu.lst and not in grub.cfg ?
Do you use legacy 'grub' or the so called (many names) grub2, grub-pc, etc...
If it's the latter case, have a look at grub.cfg

sirius57 you say you've checked and the menu.lst is there, but you check it was accurate. If you post it's content here we can take a look at it to make sure it'd be functional.

Opensuse 11.1 still used Grub Legacy so the menu.lst file would be a good start. The error: no such device would indicate there was some change or problem with partitions. You might google "bootinfoscript", go to the site and download and run the script and post the output, a results.txt file if you cannot resolve this on your own.

Thank you to all who replied. I was unable to do anything with the drive to fix grub. I backed up all my data and burned a dvd of opensuse 13.2 factory which I found out is a beta version. I always install the boot loader to mbr, but even after installing 13.2, it failed to boot. Then I tried the default of installing to / on sda2 and that worked. Also to my surprise, all my data in /home was there! Now all that is left is the tweeking to get virtualbox and wine to work with my existing virtual machines.
