OpenOffice3 won't start..

Alright... I have recently installed (and re-installed) Arch Linux with X and WindowMaker. Now I tried to install OpenOffice 3 (via 'go-openoffice') and the install worked just fine but when I try to start it (or any of writer, spreadsheet, etc) I get this message:

Quote:
The application cannot be started.
The user interface language cannot be determined.
what does this mean? Shouldn't that be already specified in the system? It's ENGLISH or at least it should be? Any suggestions?

ps: there were already entries for openoffice when I installed WindowMaker. Do I have to make some changes in the command?

Something like this:
http://www.mail-archive.com/arch-gen.../msg08812.html
http://www.mail-archive.com/users@op...msg100606.html
... OOo does a lot of things internally (it has to be cross platform for eg) - however, having something specified is not the same as being able to access the specification.

Look through:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenOffice

Did you try starting, say, owriter, from the terminal?
Did you do any of the investigations like the users in the links?

I'm afraid there is no information in your post for me help you further.

here's what I did so far:

I removed my current ooffice install, removed all directories associated with (go-) openoffice and installed openoffice-base plus most of the suggested dependencies.

I did
Quote:
[patrick@myhost ~]$ sudo chown -R patrickatrick ~/.config/.openoffice.org/
[patrick@myhost ~]$ sudo chmod -R 0755 ~/.config/.openoffice
tried to launch oo from wmaker - same error message

tried run oo from terminal and I get this:

Quote:
[patrick@myhost ~]$ soffice
[Java framework] Error in function createSettingsDocument (elements.cxx).
javaldx failed!

** (soffice:2182): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number
[patrick@myhost ~]$ soffice -writer
[Java framework] Error in function createSettingsDocument (elements.cxx).
javaldx failed!

** (soffice:2203): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number
[patrick@myhost ~]$ soffice -spreadsheet
[Java framework] Error in function createSettingsDocument (elements.cxx).
javaldx failed!

** (soffice:2224): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number
[patrick@myhost ~]$
so if I see this right then this is not a permissions/owner issue after all?
do I have to pass 'version number' to some config file? hmm..

UPDATE: tried 'sudo /soffice' and it works now BUT: I still get a error message:
Quote:
[patrick@myhost ~]$ sudo soffice

** (soffice:2335): WARNING **: unable to get gail version number
[patrick@myhost ~]$
But I shouldn't have to do 'sudo' for that?? I still can't run it as user, even though I set the .config/.openoffice for 'user'.

oh, well this has to do for now..

=================
Where did you download the OpenOffice that you installed? Also you say you installed "openoffice-base" -- do you mean just that one component?
