So guess you have to pick to fix one problem and replace it with another. Oddly I have yet to find a text editor as functional as Kate, but I find that one is very distro specific, on some distros it's really buggy, on some it's not.
I tried Kate in Mint Xfce and MATE and also found it to be a mess. Much of the software in the KDE world is too dependent on a KDE setup I suppose.

So, after migrating from Mint 17.3 KDE to Mint 18 MATE, I ended up using Xed. It's not as great as Kate but it does the job, and you can even set it to a Kate colour theme. I use Brackets for my web development work anyway. I also carried on using three KDE applications which weren't too KDE-dependent, namely KCalc, KCharSelect and KRuler. For everything else, I now use non-KDE equivalents.

To be honest with you, I'm glad that I got off the KDE roller-coaster, particularly given my dislike of Plasma 5. The ride is much smoother now, and I look forward to a much calmer upgrade path in the future.

I'm on Mint 18 Cinnamon now. Just dealing with all the normal "after reinstall" crap that needs to be reconfigured. But at least this problem is gone now.

I will just have to try to find an alternate editor to Kate I suppose.

One issue I DID notice is that there is no way to type paths anymore. You always have to browse through folders. Not a HUGE deal but kidna annoying as if I already have a window open it's just faster to copy and paste. Oh well, can't have your cake and eat it too. Just glad the drag issue is gone.

If it's Xed you're using, press ctrl-l (lower-case ell) in the Open dialog. The top bar will then empty, ready for you to paste in the filepath of the file you want to open.
