I am testing the Ubuntu 11.10 beta aka Oneiric Ocelet, I see there are new eyes candies and improvement (yet to see !), but I am disappointed to see the default Unity desktop completely replaced the Classic one. The new desktop is quite confusing to me, I find it very hard to look for what I want, since I don't have a touch screen the layout make it very hard to use, I am more used to the classic old school type desktop, which unfortunately completely removed after the upgrade, even I installed it back everything changed, ie. the time clock is dead locked at the center I couldn't move it, and I couldn't add applet to the taskbar like before, even worst I can't tell the battery level on my notebook, right click on the battery icon will do nothing, I also want the power switch to serve as quick shutdown, but it is not settable in this version.
On the first boot up I got message about my graphic card does not support the new desktop functions blah blah blah, but the notebook is one of the latest breed I just purchase ! am I alone here ?
Btw I should have posted this on the Ubuntu forum, but I always let down by the responsiveness of the forum, LQ forum on the other hand always responds quick and make me feel at home !

Then your graphics card is either currently not supported, you have not installed the correct driver or the system has general problems with your graphics setup (NVidia Optimus?).
But I don't have this problem before the upgrade, and I don't see what is not working right with the display, it is quite a setback if the *new version* does not support the h/w it used to support before, it is an Intel HD graphics, anyway I'll wait for the official release to see what comes.

Nice, but the developers aren't here! And after all, the idea of a beta release is so that you can tell them all the things they need to get sorted. There do seem to be a lot of problems in your case, though. I thought the idea of basing on Debian was so that the Debian developers did most of the work for them
If you want a more traditional desktop you can switch to xfce 4.8 (install xubuntu desktop, purge unity) which is very much like gnome 2.x nowadays. Another option is to continue using Ubuntu 10.04/11.04 or Linux Mint for the next year or so and then reevaluate the situation.
