"Nvidia" driver Blank screen on startx

Hello everyone,Im using Fedora Core 6 and I have been fighting with direct rendering and 3d acceleration for about three weeks straight now...maybe more I lost count. I had an ATI radeon 9200 pro and couldnt get it to work properly...oh well it was an aging card anyway and people whine about ati alot anyway, I bought an NVIDIA GEforce 6800 xt video card (AGP).

My problem is that there is no 3d acceleration (not a big surprise im using the nv driver) so I download and install the nvidia driver from nvidia's website NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run)

After the install it says that everything is fine (although it warned me about not knowing where to save its module but this I dont think thats the problem as xorg.0.log has no errors involving the nvidia modules) I startx and get a black screen, no mouse, no keyboard, ctr-alt-F* doesnt work ctr-alt-del doesnt work, nothing...Im at my whits end, the xorg.0.log has no (EE)'s or (WW)'s so Im really confused...please help!

PS. below is my xorg.conf and my xorg.0.log from a crashed session (I know its from a crashed sesion cause it says "nvidia" module and not "nv") Im sorry about coppying and pasting but im not sure how to attach, if you could tell me I could save alot of people alot of annoying reading)

# yum install kmod-nvidia

I believe there is a sticky on this very subject - fixing this is non-trivial.

Simon, I took your advice and uninstalled the nvidia driver (sh nvidia... --uninstall) which said that the configuration had changed and it would try as best it could to uninstall...not sure what that means I do not think I changed much except maybe renamed the xorg.conf backup.

After uninstalling the drivers from the website, I installed the kmod-nvidia driver for my kernel (2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6) and restarted my xserver (ctr-alt-backspace) and I had the same problem, a completely unresponsive black screen, it just hung and I needed to hard reboot.

I dont think this would be a problem but it might, I used the updates.img to install fedora to aviod the infamous i586 problem. (which it did I checked) and then I applied the kernel update to upgrade from .18 to .19 which seemed to go fine, but It left the .18 kernel installed (it makes sense that way if there is something wrong with .19 on your system you can go back) im just not sure if the installer had issues with that...I did select the right one from yumex. here is my xorg.conf for the livna install:

# Xorg configuration created by pyxf86config

any more ideas anyone? thanks for the help so-far.

ps. how do stickys work, ive seen the word thrown around but dont know about it...

Did you read the sticky? Merely uninstalling the nvidia driver is not enough, you have to go through and repair everything it broke. Once you have everything back to a clean install, with kmod-nvidia installed from livna, then we can actually try to figure what is happening.

This is the trouble with proprietary drivers - especially when they are poorly packaged. There is just no way of figuring what is wrong.

Did you read the thread I pointed you to?

I didnt read the sticky cause I have no idea what a sticky is, or how they work...if you could give me a link to it that would be great, or a page that explains stickies....I did read the forum thread you posted, but that does not seem to be my issue, my xorg is using the "nv" driver just fine, and anaconda installed nv, my issue is trying to get 3d acceleration which the nv drivers wont do.

ps. how are the kmod-nvidia drivers or the xorg-x11-nvidia drivers available through anaconda as that forum suggested? wouldnt you need to add the livna repository or something to get that option in anaconda?

thanks for your help so far.

A "sticky" is a thread that doesn't go away over time - it stays "stuck" to the top of the forum. In this case, look in the fedora subforum right at the top and you will see a thread called A must read before installing nvidia & ATI.

Before posting to any forum, you should have a read through the stickies in it.

I am not saying that using the livna packaged driver will solve your problem by itself - it just that unless you use it, there is no good way to tell.

alright, I reinstalled fedora (didnt feel like reinstalling all of X and skrewing something up), and installed the livna driver:

livna kmod-nvidia-9755-2.2.6.19_1.2911.6.5.fc6.i686.

my kernel is:

kernel-2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6.i686

It installed fine, and after reboot I type "init 5" to switch to init 5 (i changed inittab to boot me into init 3 so if x breaks my whole sys doesnt). It shows some standard output and then goes black, just like before. The system is unresponsive to key combinations and such. here is the x log file:

Hiya there violetttheconqueror! I'm not a Fedora user, but nVidia caught my eye in the title of your post, as I also have an nVidia card.
According to the log above, there are a few things missing from the xorg.conf file. At first glance, there's no mouse specified, and there's no monitor section either. Having stuff autoconfigured by other stuff tends to be unreliable in my experience.
Now, though I use Slackware Linux, I suspect that the X system is pretty much the same from one Linux to the next.
I also downloaded the 'proprietary' new accelerated driver for my card (nVidia GeForce4 MX440 AGP8X) from the nvidia website; the only difference is that mine is the 9631, rather than yours which is like 974-whatever..
Below, I have pasted most of my own xorg.conf file, minus a few things for clarity--- I use 2 screens, so I have removed everything that pertains to the second screen.
Also, I know you want Direct Rendering, but keep in mind, the nVidia drivers do not like the DRI oprion, just incase you have been trying to use that. It will crash.
Also, I should point out that if you have not read the entire README file that either came with the nVidia driver OR is available from the website, I recommend you download it; it is FULL of valuable X-server information related to the nVidia driver(s). It can be confusing, and also tends to jump around a little bit, but is VERY helpful if you take the time to read it through a few times.
Also, keep in mind, the X server does NOT like excessive use of TAB's inside the xorg.conf file. It will refuse to start the server, but won't tell you why. You'll find that with the nvidia drivers, the error messages are few and far between, even when it is not working.

OK, so here is my file, trimmed down for one monitor, and with a few comments added to hopefully help you:

So.. backup your old file, and put this one in its place. change anything you think needs to be changed, like font paths, BusID, etc, and give it a try.
it may work right away for you, it may not, but it should give you a good starting point (I really hope it helps you )
Finally, make sure you do the driver installations with the X server NOT running, so use a console; my driver tells me to exit the X server first, I assume yours does too, but thought I'd mention it.
OH and as for where it should be putting its module, on my system (slackware remember), I find the nvidia module installs in /lib/modules/<my kernel>/drivers/video, and it is called nvidia.ko
Best of luck! I'll check back tomorrow and see how you're making out

violettheconqueror: Did you use the graphical install? It's just that you don't seem to have a mouse entry in there. If you attach a mouse and reboot, fedora should aquire it. Also: is this a laptop?

Contrary to the opinion of some of the hard-core folk (like slackware users) it is generally best to let the automatic systems configure what they can before messing about with config files. This is especially true of highly automated distros like fedora and ubuntu.

Since we last spoke, I had the task of installing FC6 to a laptop and ended up with exactly the same problem... which is why I wanted to know if you installed in graphical mode.

In my case, the laptop had the ability to redirect output to a vga port on the back. Fn F5 (on this one) fixed it by bringing the output back to the LCD panel.

If this is not a laptop, you may try checking if your monitor is plugged into the right socket (for dual-port boards). Swap them over to make sure.

Lastly, you'll notice that the inclusion of logs makes your post really looong? If you use the "code" bv code, this will put things into a nice box with scrollbars. (A bit like the quote box, below, but for code.)

Also, I should point out that if you have not read the entire README file that either came with the nVidia driver OR is available from the website, I recommend you download it; it is FULL of valuable X-server information related to the nVidia driver(s).
Is any of this not packaged with the livna rpm? Note: it is a bad idea for fedora to install the proprietary nvidia module from the nvidia site. I understand slackware doesn't suffer the same issues. (of course, it cannot hurt to read more docs )

Also, keep in mind, the X server does NOT like excessive use of TAB's inside the xorg.conf file. It will refuse to start the server, but won't tell you why.
... last part is a good warning.

fedora has quite a few gotchas with the nvidia drivers ... see:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...threadid=99285
... it's a long thread.

Excellent, thanks for those tips, Simon I will check out the nVidia gotcha's later today, always on the lookout to learn something new.
LOL, I'm hardly hardcore though, just a new-to-Slackware chick with a nVidia card. As for Fedora and Livna, I stand to learn much about both, but hopefully I haven't confused the whole issue for Violettheconqueror. I have no idea if the Livna driver includes README's or anything from nVidia specifically.
RE: the DRI, Yas I mean the Kernel DRI module. nVidia does indeed do it their own way, and can be verified to be working with 'glxinfo' in a console.
And finally, I agree, it can never hurt to read more Docs!
Best of luck to you Violet, and thanks again for the clarifications Simon!
(PS - Did I mention I knew nothing about Fedora? :P If not, I should have It is one I have never tried...Yet )
Cheers!
Sasha

I did use the graphical install for the fedora system with the updates img so i know i have the right kernel and all, and it worked fine. I found it interesting that there was no mouse...I went and checked my working xorg.conf (which used the "nv" driver instead of "nvidia") and it does not have an entry for mouse either, however I am using a (USB) mouse as we speak. Im not sure if this is important or not.

No, im using a desktop with an agp nvidia Geforce 6800 XT, it has three outputs DVI VGA and Svid...I have tried on earlier occurances of my problem to switch ports with no success, but I couldnt test the svid to see if perhaps I was outputting to the wrong port. Im using the vga right now but have a dvi - vga adapter so it wont be hard to test...not sure what to do about the svid though. I dont think this is the problem however because my screen is recieving signal and giving that not-quite-black instead of a no signal or turned off black. Also ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt-F3 should have done something if it was outputting to the wrong moniter.

I agree, not to mention I have no Idea what im doing in xorg despite working alot with it...know of any good xorg.conf tutorials or anythign like that? Also, i installed kmod-nvidia through the gui yum installer without going into init 3 like the nvidia driver from their website asks you to, is that a problem?

Just to test out VbCode and to see if it is helpful here is my working (nv) xorg.conf:
Code:

Sorry about that, I didnt know any other way to do it...Im rather new to formums and all of that, never used them much. Is there an information page about these formums that explains stickys and vbcode and all of that in one easy place? That would help me (and you lol) alot.

I'll read some of those "gotcha's" as you call them and maybe find something...any other ideas?

A Monitor section is highly recommended and your Screen section is lacking. You can probably set this up using Nvidia's config utility but how are you going to get there without being able to use X?

Here's my xorg.conf monitor and screen sections for reference:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "LCD_default"
    HorizSync 31.5 - 90.0
    VertRefresh 60.0 - 60.0
    Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"

    #VideoRam 32768
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
    Identifier "NVIDIA GeForce2 Go"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "NVIDIA GeForce2 Go"
    Monitor "LCD_default"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "BackingStore" "true"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 8
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 16
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection
You'll want to add your modes in the screen subsections and you want to create a monitor section. Hope this helps!

EDIT: Obviously you'll want to substitute your own values for your monitor rather than use mine. Don't worry about the little options like Backingstore and RenderAccel, etc as I use those for transparent windows. Adding a monitor section and defining the resolutions is probably what is giving you issues with X and I don't know why an automated program didn't do that for you...

My real reason for editing is that you should still be able to get to a getty (ctrl+alt+F?) even though X is writhing... make sure your kernel stuff matches versions. The kernel itself "allows" for those gettys to exist and init calls them. So if your inittab is "healthy" but you still can't get to them then it's a kernel problem and separate from X not working.

I see the nv driver is fine ... good.

You have installed kmod-nvidia, but you haven't enabled it - I can tell because you say you didn't close down X like you did with the official version. You have to do this...

http://www.fedorafaq.org/#nvidia

init 3

(login as root)

nvidia-config-display enable

init 5

Now see if it is working...

There is an official nvidia/linux forum too...
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

...

As regard the forums (fora? forae?)... see

Lq Rules
tutorial

It is kinda interesting that mouse etc go without monitor or input sections in xorg.conf ... I would make sure I run nvidia-config-display enable before trying fiddling with xorg.conf ... What you really want is an xorg.conf from someone with FC6 and a working nvidia card.

Zettabil: I definately dont get ctrl-alt-F* when i go into init 5 (and therefor start X) I am sure that the driver i installed matches my kernel (double and triple checked) btw the new kernel came out for fedora 6 (might just be livna that released it) so im now using: kernel-2.6.20-1.2925.fc6.i686 the 18-1 kernel also shows up when I look, but grub loads 20-1.

Also, i am afraid to blindly copy code from your xorg because im not sure of any differences between slackware and fedora and im not too savvy as to how xorg.conf works...also my xorg.conf for the working "nv" driver and the one for "nvidia" are not different in the areas you mentioned I dont beleive.

Simon: I actually had to reinstall fedora (really tripped out, not sure why, i think it has something to do wiht installing amarok and therefore kde-core and some other stuff). Im now working with a semi clean slate...I have installed all updates and added livna.

I installed the kmod-nvidia driver, which depends on xorg-nvidia something-or-other. I then went into init 3 ran nvidia-config-display enable. That command ran with no messages at all, I assume that means it went well (it'd be nice if it would give confirmation or something)...anyway, I init 5'd it, and had the same problem as always, no response from keyboard, nothing. Here is the log xorg.0.log file (im assuming we dont want the "xorg.0.log.old do we?):

I tried disabling SElinux cause ive read that it can mess with the drivers. I simply disabled it and ran init 5 but no dice. Should I reconfigure the nividia driver with SElinux disabled?

I also noticed that whenever I reboot, the system replaces my working xorg.conf with the nvidia version that doesnt work..(i set inittab to boot into init 3 so its easy to fix but still). I have both versions backed up, Im not sure why it does this though or if its of any significance.
