No audio for user in bedrock with sid & gentoo

it's said that bedrock's weakspot at this stage in its development is stuff tied closely to init. this might fall under that category, not sure yet.

when i run audacity from su -l, i get my alsa audio working fine, it shows up in those drop-down menus in the toolbars, and sound works. when run as user, or just a su or sudo, no audio. same with mpv.

as user
Code:
$ audacity

[edit: here's some more info thnx to alsa-info.sh: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=3f...678744d4891211 ]

now here's the funny stuff... digit (the user) is in the audio group (~er, and in my clumsy meddlings, now has audio as primary group in sid, oops), when checked with id digit and groups digit. when running just groups in whatever term i get when i first log in, or that tmux gives me in a new term, it gives a different list, until i su -l. root, however, does not have audio listed as one of its groups... yet it can play audio.

i also tried
Code:
su -l digit -c audacity
but the same absense of alsa (or any other option, of course) showing up.

so, audacity (and other audio stuff) works for me as root, but not as user. (:-[

i also tried getting audo from my gentoo client, and seemed to be encountering the exact same problem.

user cannot access nor even reccognise the existence of the soundcard.

and how come root can play sound without audio group, and user cant, with audio group. ?!

anyone know where the problem lays?

is it an alsa problem? (i heard murmerings amidst my many googlings of recent woes with many a similar output, but failed to find a relevant/general solution)
is it a file premissions issue somewhere?
have i mucked up groups, gids, uids, or anything like that?
am i just dense and have been mis-using alsa [re]initialisation?
do i need to copy over some alsa/asound config?
some kernel or firmware issue??? (even tho root can play)
is this something to do with bedrock specifically?
- did i use some bork adduser, or use it in the wrong place/time during install/configure?
- have i neglected some key piece of the configuration?
- something missing from my mounts / framework ?
- some misconfiguration of permissions with my /bedrock/clients partition?
- some init-tied thing?
- need an aditional bind mount for some alsa dir??
- an unfollowed symlink causing this?
- just need to use brp more and *insert bedrock command here*?
- need to use brl to ______ ?
- do groups need to have unified gid across clients?
- one of the above issues caused essential alsa files to not get copied?

yes, clearly i've given this a lot of thought, and not got a clue. ^_^

whatever other helpful outputs should i be looking at and sharing?

(i'll try to check back on this thread frequently, and share whatever solutions or suggestions i get from elsewhere too. ...tho for right now, i need a rest to let my head cool off n get back to a useable state. ~too long on one problem makes digit an ineffective nub.)
