Need a linux distro that does some older things

Please forgive the complexity of my post, and if I'm in the wrong forum, my apologies.

I need a desktop distro that does the following:

1. Has VMG -- a magnification program -- in its repository.

2. Has Wine 1.x availble.

I'vr tried to use playonlinux to get my Windows apps to run. No luck -- a nightmare. They work fine on Wine 1.x, but every distro I look at uses Wine 3.x and later.

Any insights will be appreciated. My desktoo is about six years old but runs newer distros, like the latest Mint (what I'm using now).

Thanks.

Do you use KDE? If so, there is a built in program called KMag which appears to offer the same functionality.

Unfortunately, the Linux version of VMG is quite old now, with the latest version being released almost 10 years ago... and it appears to be unmaintained. Some of the libraries that it uses are long since deprecated. Another big problem is that many distros are now progressing away from X11/xorg. Wayland is the Next Big Thing™, so programs like VMG will cease to be useful unless they are updated. Your time might be better spent learning how to use an actively maintained alternative, like the one I mentioned.

If you'll indulge me, could you please let me know which Windows programs you're trying to run that don't work with Wine 3.x?

Wine certainly has become larger and more complex over time, but anything which works on 1.x should definitely work with 3.x. A very common problem is that many Windows programs are still 32 bit, while newer Linuxes are tending to be pure 64 bit.

Thankfully, there are many methods to get Wine working these days, including easy work-arounds for the 32/64 bit issue.

If you can tell me which programs you're trying to use I'll have a go before trying to advise you.

No, not using KDE. I'm using the XFCE desktop with Linux Mint.

I'm a religious researcher. The two programs I need to use are Watchtower Library and Concord (Christian Science).

Is there some wisdom about these problems working under Wine 5.x? This is the version in my Mint install. No luck getting anything to run.

You mention easy ways to get the 32-bit support installed. Any wisdom here, too, would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help.

VMG PKGBUILD
You can utilise this info even if you don't use Archlinux:
  • dependencies: mostly lib32-gtk2 - the name might be slightly different on debian based distros
  • debian based distros will require you to install a bunch of '-dev' packages to compile anything
  • manually perform the steps outlined in the package() function

Doesn't look too good.
I suggest a VM for running these softwares.
