Mathematica crashes XGL

I've got SuSE 10.1 running Xgl under gnome, and anytime I try and start Mathematica it causes Xgl to completely crash and requires a restart of the x server. Has anyone found a way to get Mathematica to run under Xgl?

Just for your information: last time I tried Mathematica over Gnome (without XGL or any other fancy stuff) it always crashed the panel(s), and restarting them didn't help -- only restarting X brought them back to life. On XFCE I haven't seen similar consequences, so I guess it's a Gnome-related proglem.
